In August of 2004, Hurricane Charley touched down at the Charlotte County Airport in Punta Gorda (PGD). The resulting damage was devastating as it rendered the airport inoperative for a significant period of time. The owners and senior management of EG Constructors and EG Solutions were the owners of MEA Group, who was the general consultant to PGD at the time. MEA’s affiliate company, MEA Constructors, was contracted by PGD to design and rebuild the airport under a design/build contract. Our services included tracking costs from a variety of sources, including insurance proceeds, FAA and FDOT grants, FEMA assistance and local funding.
The project included the rebuilding of the majority of hangars and other ancillary buildings, including the terminal complex. Some buildings were totally demolished and had to be removed and replaced. Over 100 T-hangars were rebuilt or newly constructed. Over 50,000 square feet of hangar and office space was rebuilt. Over 30,000 lineal feet of new security fence were erected as well as a new access control system with cameras, a new airfield electrical vault, and airfield lighting. A new administrative building was designed but not constructed, as the old facility was remodeled and signage was installed.
